Re-Indexing

Program Navigation : On the Desktop

Section Description

Re-indexing is the process of recreating the index files for your databases. These files are responsible for the ordering of your databases but they can be quite temperamental, and if your computer crashes or there is a power surge, these files can be easily corrupted. You may notice that you are getting unusual error messages when in the system, such as 'Index out of date' or 'Index does not exist'. These errors can be fixed by running the re-indexing routine.

When you install the Windows Stock System, you will notice that you get two icons placed on your desktop. One is called Windows Stock System, which loads the system and the other one is called Rebuild Indices. If you do not have this second icon, you can create it by copying the Windows Stock System shortcut icon, renaming it to Rebuild Indices, doing a right click on the new icon and selecting Properties, and adding ' /M' to the end of the Target path (note the space before the forward slash). Click on OK to save the target change.

Steps

To Re-Index the Database
  1. Double click on the Rebuild Indices icon and you will see the screen shown above.
  2. Click on the All Databases option.
  3. Click on the Delete All Indices button.
  4. Click on the Re-Create Index button.
  5. The speed of this routine will depend on the speed of your computer and the size of your databases.
  6. When it has finished, click on Close to exit the screen.
  7. Note: This routine cannot be run while you are in the main Stock System. Make sure you have exited the system before you run the re-index.
